ARLINGTON – The Jaguars used a 15-0 run during the second and third quarters to overtake Birdville and pull away from the Hawks as Summit won 64-54 in a Class 5A Region 1 bi-district game at Lamar High School.
Summit, #7 in the final Class 5A state rankings, will play Saginaw in the area round.
Saginaw beat FW Southwest on Tuesday.
The Hawks, which finished fourth out of District 7-5A, was lights out from deep in the opening quarter and first half. Birdville hit five 3-pointers in the first eight minutes.
Trent Bowers hit the first three and Tasshir Warren went deep to give Birdville a 6-5 lead. Niko Lucero added the fourth trey and Bowers hit one late as the Hawks led Summit 15-8 after the first quarter.
Birdville’s first 18 points all came on the three.
Sawyer Dotson hit from the corner to give the Hawks a 20-15 edge in the second quarter.
The Jags got a bucket in the low post by Peter Serunjoji and then baskets by Isaiah Walker and Quinton Brooks pulled Summit within 24-23 with 90 seconds left in the half. Dotson hit another three and two free throws to push the margin to 29-23.
Derrick Brown hit a Summit three just before the buzzer to make it 29-26 at intermission.
Serunjoji began the third quarter with a floater to get Summit within 29-28. Brown drove to the basket and laid it in to give the Jags the lead for good at 30-29, which made it six straight points. Brown and Theo Brannan hit back to back threes to extend the run to 13-0 and lead at 36-29 with 3:44 on the clock.
Ian Sedah rebounded his own miss and scored to make the run 15-0 before Birdville ended the drought. Birdville got a three late from Josh Zakaria and Summit was up 43-36 entering the final stanza.
Zakaria hit another three in the fourth to make it five, but Sedah scored on another put-back for Summit. The lead grew to 53-42 on two threes from Jesse Warner midway through the frame. Dotson’s three and a pair of free throws by Zakaria got it to 59-53 with 1:19 to play, but the Hawks got no closer.
Summit hit 10 threes and went 14 of 27 from the line.
The Jags only attempted two free throws in the first half.
Brannan led Summit with 16 points and Brown added 13. Warner chipped in 10 followed by nine for Sedah and eight for Serunjoji. The Jags finished the regular season as district champs in 8-5A.
Birdville hit 11 threes and went 9 of 11 from the charity stripe.
Dotson and Zakaria led the Hawks with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
