Coach Tommy Brakel has hit another milestone in his already hall of fame basketball career.
Following North Crowley’s 75-41 home win over Weatherford on Tuesday night, Brakel won his 750th career game – all with the Panthers. NC is 20-3 overall this season and improved to 4-0 in 3-6A.
The Panthers are ranked #2 in the GM Sports Media 6A poll and #3 in the TABC state poll.
Brakel had won his 700th game during the 2022-23 season opener against Dunbar. He’s been at North Crowley since the school opened 26 years ago. Brakel is a remarkable 261-16 on his home court. NC went 31-7 last year and 14-0 in district with a trip to the 6A Region 1 semifinals.
North Crowley has missed the playoffs just once in program history.
The Panthers won the Class 5A state title in 2008, a 73-67 victory over Fort Bend Dulles. Brakel was also voted 5A coach of the year that season. They have posted 20+ wins in 24 seasons and have gone 25 straight years of being state ranked. NC has won district 15 times and had both a 66-game home win streak and 77-game district win streak during Brakel’s tenure. The win on Tuesday improved their district record to 332-26 all time.
Prior to North Crowley, Brakel spent four years as a junior varsity coach at Crowley HS where his teams went 163-9. Brakel played college ball at Sul Ross State where he was a two-time NAIA All-American and graduated in 1993.
