McKinney grad Nate Leonard will be named Lions’ head football coach

According to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, McKinney ISD will name Nate Leonard the next head football coach at McKinney High School. Leonard, who graduated from McKinney in 2010, takes over for Marcus Shavers, who stepped down in December after six seasons.

McKinney is coming off a 9-3 record last season.

Leonard spent last season as the head coach at New Braunfels Canyon – his first year as a head coach. Canyon posted a 7-4 record with a playoff appearance. He also had stints as an assistant with San Antonio Memorial, San Antonio Reagan and Seguin.

McKinney made a playoff appearance in four of six seasons under Shavers including a trip to the regional semifinals in 2022.

During his playing days at McKinney, Leonard played offensive line and was honorable mention all-state and first-team all-district as a senior in 2009. The Lions made the playoffs in back-to-back seasons. He also lettered in track and powerlifting. He started in all 34 games at center during his first three years at UT-San Antonio.
