Lake Country girls roll past Arlington Grace Prep in 1 vs 2 state showdown

FORT WORTH – Erika Hancock posted a big double-double of 31 points and 14 rebounds as Lake Country defeated Grace Prep 66-38 in a TAPPS 1-4A game on Tuesday featuring the top two teams in the state rankings. Lake Country is ranked #1 in TAPPS 4A by the TABC followed by Grace Prep at #2.

The game was tied at 5 following a jumper by Kate Jeter and three from Emerson Minor for the GP Lions. Zaria Howard made a put back for Grace Prep and Addi Durand registered a block on a LCCS fast break as the Lions led 9-7.

Then the Eagles took over.

Hancock was fouled on a bucket that tied it at 9. London Chandler hit a three and the Eagles led 14-9 after seven straight points. Campbell Young got a steal and hit a pull up three as LCCS led 17-9 after the first quarter. Another steal ended in a three-point play by Chandler. The run extended to 13-0 and Lake Country was up 20-9.

GP snapped the drought, but two more buckets by Hancock grew the lead to 27-11.

Sophie Jordan had a nice drive to the hole for GP and converted a three-point play. Since trailing 9-7, Lake Country ended the half on a 33-6 run. The Eagles were ahead 40-15 at the intermission. Young hit a second three to open the third quarter. Jeter drained a jumper just inside the arc.

Hancock picked up a rebound, tossed it to Chandler, who got the assist on a layup by Campbell.

Hancock converted two more layups and had 29 after three as LCCS led 60-26. Her final bucket came early in the fourth quarter to give Lake Country a 35-point lead. LCCS improved to 23-2 overall and 4-0 in district.

The Eagles will next play TC-Willow Park on Saturday.

GP, which dropped to 19-6 and 4-1, will play Willow Park next Tuesday Jan. 23.
