ARLINGTON – Former Allen quarterback and now Arizona Cardinal Kyler Murray led the Eagles back in 2013 to 63 points in their championship win over Pearland. 10 years later, that record dropped on Saturday courtesy of DeSoto.
The DeSoto Eagles rolled to 36 points in the FIRST QUARTER – and 74 total in a 74-14 victory over Humble Summer Creek in the Class 6A Division 2 state championship on Saturday at AT&T Stadium. DeSoto repeats as 6A D2 champ – in what could be its last 6A game for at least the next two seasons.
DeSoto turned in 5A D1 enrollment numbers, but it hasn’t been determined if the school will opt up to 6A or not. The Eagles beat Austin Vandegrift 42-17 last season. They won their first title (third overall), over Cibolo Steele 38-29 in 2016 – also in 6A D2.
The 74 points scored by DeSoto was also the second most all time in any class for 11-man in state championship game history. 2A Mart scored 76 vs Gruver in 2018.
QB DJ Bailey (Sam Houston State commit) was voted offensive game MVP with 16 of 22 passing for 281 yards and five total touchdowns. Keylan Abrams was defensive MVP with six tackles, four solo, one sack, three tackles for loss and one interception.
DeSoto (15-0) rolled up 553 total yards to Summer Creek’s 156.
DeSoto gained 401 yards and led 46-7 at halftime.
The Eagles D nearly got into the record books. Up until the last SC drive, the Bulldogs were threatening for the fewest yards in a 6A state title game. Southlake Carroll held to Smithson Valley to 88 yards in 2004.
DeSoto scored 36 points in the first 12 minutes – 22 in less than half a quarter.
Marvin Duffey got the route going with his 54-yard touchdown run just 54 seconds into the game. Less than a minute later and star back Deondrae Riden punched it in from the 14. Daylon Singleton had a big game with three touchdown passes from Bailey – the first from 26 yards and DeSoto led 22-0 at the 6:18 mark of the first quarter.
Bailey and Singleton hooked up again on a 55-yard pass with 4:40 to go.
Lloyd Avant got Summer Creek on the board with a 6-yard TD run at the 1:09 mark. But the Eagles scored as the first quarter clock expired on Bailey’s 52-yard pass to Singleton.
Angel Diaz added a 33-yard field goal in the second followed by Bailey’s 1-yard TD run and DeSoto led 46-7 at intermission. DeSoto got four more touchdowns before it was all said and done. Jaden Trawick scored from the 8, Bailey threw it 26 yards to Ethan Feaster and backup QB Chad Williams and Antonio Pride connected on a 12-yard pass late in the fourth.
The best touchdown of the night came with 9:50 left in the final period.
Aundre Wisner blocked a SC punt attempt and Sael Reyes recovered. He pitched it to Brandon Booker who scored 27 yards later for the touchdown. DeSoto coach Claude Mathis was shown on the jumbo tron excited about the play and even gave the crowd a WOW.
Avant scored SC’s second TD on a 1-yard run with 4:46 left in the game.
He finished with 42 yards on 20 carries.
Duffey led DeSoto with 151 yards on 12 carries while Riden chipped in 73 on 12.
Pride went for eight grabs and 112 yards while Singleton added five for 136.
