State’s #1 hooper and Southlake soccer star: What to expect from National Signing Day

National Signing Day officially starts Wednesday morning with more than 300 high school athletes in the DFW metroplex celebrating their hard work over the next week. (LIST OF DFW KIDS CLICK HERE)

BASKETBALL

In Carrollton, the state’s top-ranked boys basketball player is staying in Texas.

Newman Smith 6-9 forward Nic Codie will sign his NLI with the Longhorns. He averaged 16 points and 9 rebounds last season. Codie is the #1 2024 in Texas and the #10 power forward in the country according to 247Sports.

Codie is also ranked #46 overall in the 2024 class across the nation.

In Glen Rose, fresh off an impressive volleyball win on Monday, a pair of its basketball stars will sign. Forward Aimee Flippen will sign with ACU while guard Grace Booth will sign with East Central. The two players helped the Tigers to a 3-1 win over Decatur in the Class 4A Region 1 quarterfinals.

Flippen and Booth helped GR to a history making basketball season last year.

Glen Rose went 39-2 and reached the UIL state tournament for the first time since 1971.

Haltom forward Kuo Atak will sign his NLI with the Oklahoma Sooners.

Atak is a 3-star basketball player and is the state’s #6 player in the Class of 2024.

He’s also the #27 power forward in 2024 across the country.

SOCCER

Over in Addison, Southlake’s Kennedy Fuller will sign her NLI with North Carolina as part of the celebration with Solar Soccer Club. Fuller and her teammates will enjoy the celebration on Wednesday night at Greenhill School.

Fuller, who reclassified to the Class of 2024, has been the Gatorade Texas Girls Soccer Player of the Year each of the past two seasons with the Carroll Dragons. She immediately burst onto the scene as a freshman in 2022 helping SLC to the Class 6A state championship.

Fuller had a hat trick in the title match vs Rockwall and was state champ MVP.

She finished with 26 goals and 15 assists. Fuller followed that up with a program record 55 goals in the spring as Carroll reached the 6A Region 1 Final.

VOLLEYBALL

LSU volleyball will officially add three of the top players in the state on Wednesday in Flower Mound’s Bri Watson, Wakeland’s Jessica Jones and Fossil Ridge’s Lainee Pyles.

Watson and FM beat Lake Highlands on Monday to advance to the Class 6A Region 1 tournament this weekend. Jones and Wakeland are also in the playoffs while Pyles’ career came to an end last week in area.

Pyles did help Ridge to a historic playoff win, beating Boswell 3-2 for its first in 24 years.

Pyles had 37 kills in that game and finished her career as the all time leader with 695 kills this season and 1,950 overall after posting 675 last year as a junior.

SOFTBALL

EIGHT from the Guyer state runner up softball team will sign.

Guyer started the season 35-0 and went 38-2 overall after falling to Pearland in the Class 6A state championship. Five starters from the title game will celebrate on Wednesday: Erin Peterson (Texas State), Gracie Willis (UT-Tyler), Jordan Osborne (University of Illinois at Chicago), Lauryn Jones (Howard) and Kaylynn Jones (Oregon).

Jones was GM Sports Media Offensive Player of the Year last season.

Pitcher Jenny Robledo, who pitched in both state games, will sign with Incarnate Word.

Reagan Hall, the state championship pitcher from Fort Worth Country Day, will sign her NLI with Stephen F. Austin. Hall posted an 11-2 record last season. She had 173 strikeouts and a stellar 0.89 ERA in 86 2/3 innings pitched.

From the plate, Hall batted 0.529 with six doubles and 25 runs batted in.

Country Day beat John Cooper School 6-0 in the SPC 3A title game in April. Hall threw a three-hit shutout and struck out 14 batters.
