Flower Mound shuts down upset-minded Lake Highlands for regional tournament berth

Lake Highlands was coming off arguably the best win in the metroplex this season – a 3-1 victory over area #1 McKinney Boyd last week in the area round. Boyd went into the match an impressive 31-1.

The Wildcats were looking for more Monday night against 6-6A #1 seed Flower Mound.

But the Jags took care of business with a convincing 25-15, 25-22, 25-11 sweep in a Class 6A Region 1 quarterfinal at Carrollton Creekview HS. Flower Mound (33-7) will play Keller or Byron Nelson in the regional tournament on Friday at Thomas Coliseum in Haltom City.

The regional final will be held on Saturday.

Lake Highlands, which finished #3 in 7-6A, ends the season 27-12.

FM held onto a 11-6 lead in the opening set on a pair of points by Villanova commit Cat Young. The lead grew to 19-12 on another kill by Young and one from Texas beach commit Audrey Jackson. The Jags capped off an impressive opening set with a kill by Angelique St. Laurent.

The Wildcats came out stronger in the second set.

Lake Highlands and Flower Mound had eight ties, including 10-10 before the Wildcats punched back with a 6-1 run and 16-11 lead. But in classic Flower Mound fashion, the Jags rallied back and got key kills by LSU commit Bri Watson to pull within 17-15.

Flower Mound had beaten Plano East 3-2 for the #1 seed on Oct. 27 after trailing 2-0.

FM ended the second with an 8-1 run and finished it off with kills by St. Laurent, Young and UTSA commit Caroline Tredwell. The Jags were looking pretty for the sweep by coming out of the third with a 10-5 lead.

Watson’s kill pushed FM up 10 at 17-7.

Watson also got the kill on match point to send the Jags to the regional tournament.
