Top HS volleyball player from Plano Prestonwood commits with Longhorns

The Texas Longhorns won the jackpot as they landed a commitment from one of the top volleyball players in the country.

Plano Prestonwood 2025 outside hitter Macaria Spears announced her commitment to join the Horns on Wednesday.

A member of the reigning TAPPS 6A state champs and TAV’s top club team, Spears put together a tremendous season as a sophomore in 2022.

Spears was TAPPS 6A all-state, state all-tournament, District 1-6A MVP after helping the Lions to the state championship and a remarkable 40-1 overall record after defeating Dallas Bishop Lynch in the final.

She was also all-tournament at the Rockwall and Volleypalooza tournaments, but her biggest individual accolade came after the season when she was awarded Gatorade Texas Player of the Year. Spears finished the season with 544 kills, 0.477 hitting, 225 digs, 65 blocks and 50 aces.

Other accolades included MaxPreps 1st team All-America, Underclassmen All-America, Prep Volleyball Player of the Year and Dallas Morning News Player of the Year.

GM Sports Media ranked her the #1 player in the area and preseason MVP for the 2023 season. But Spears missed most of August because she was training with the USA team.

Alongside head coach Ryan Mitchell, Prestonwood is 6-0 in district this season and 26-4 overall.

Meanwhile, the Longhorns are currently ranked in the Top 10 in the nation and defending national champion. They have four players from DFW: Southlake’s Asija O’Neal, Mansfield’s Molly Phillips, Frisco’s Jenna Wenaas and Justin’s Kenna Miller.
