GM Sports Media College Athlete Of The Week: Rockwall-Heath’s Josh Hoover

In our fifth installment of GM Sports Media’s college athlete of the week in 2023, TCU football player and Rockwall-Heath graduate Josh Hoover is our latest winner.

College athletes must have played for a high school in DFW.

Hoover, a redshirt freshman, passed for 439 yards and four touchdowns in TCU’s 44-11 win over BYU on Saturday. Hoover completed 37 of 58 attempts and his 439 yards passing are the most by a TCU quarterback in their first career start since Highland Park’s Chandler Morris had 461 against Baylor during the 2021 season.

The Horned Frogs totaled nearly 600 yards on offense and led the Cougars 31-3 by halftime.

Hoover threw touchdowns to four different receivers.

He threw a 42-yard scoring pass to JP Richardson for a 14-0 lead with 10:09 left in the first quarter. He connected with Jared Wiley on a 7-yard throw in the second and another 7-yard pass to Savion Williams late in the half.

His final TD came early in the third quarter when he tossed a 14-yard TD to Warren Thompson.

Hoover ranked #33 among all quarterbacks in his class while at Heath HS and was the 72nd best player in the state. The 3-star QB went on to win the prestigious Tom Landry Award in 2021 – an award given to the top HS football player in North Texas.

Hoover graduated from Heath with nearly 10,000 yards passing and 108 touchdowns. As a senior, he passed for 3,300 yards and 40 TDs.
