In our latest installment of GM Sports Media College Athlete Of The Week, we turn to Oklahoma junior and Byron Nelson grad Payton Chamberlain, who recently surpassed a career milestone.
Winners are athletes that played high school in DFW.
During OU’s sweep at Iowa Park on Sunday, Chamberlain posted 38 assists and 9 digs – surpassing 2,000 assists in her college career. Chamberlain is in her second year in Norman after spending her freshman year at Wyoming.
She now has 2,035 in her career with 1,554 coming as a Sooner.
With the win, OU picked up its second win in the Big 12.
Last season with OU, Chamberlain appeared in 23 matches with 22 starts and was fourth in the Big 12 with 9.81 assists per match while finishing with 795 assists. She posted 481 assists in 83 sets as a freshman with Wyoming.
During her time with Byron Nelson, Chamberlain was one of the best setters in the state. After splitting time her first two years, she became the full time setter for Bri Groth and the Bobcats.
As a junior, she registered nearly 2,000 assists helping Byron to the Class 6A state championship – its first in program history. Before her senior year, she was named the best player in the state by Max Preps. She would help Byron to the regional tournament.
She finished her high school career with nearly 4,000 assists.
