Lake Worth rolls past Carter-Riverside as Bullfrogs move to 2-0 in district

With identical 3-1 overall records, the Lake Worth Bullfrogs proved to be more dominate than the FW Carter-Riverside Eagles following a 51-13 win on Thursday night at Handley Field.

The Bullfrogs improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in District 6-4A Division I while the Eagles dropped to 0-2 and 3-2 overall. 

Senior Cornell Avington scored four times for Lake Worth, which put up 44 points through the first two quarters. The Bullfrogs’ defense shut out the Eagles in the second half. Avington scored three of his four touchdowns in the first half as Lake Worth built a 30-0 just in the first quarter. Jose Meza connected with a wide open Kayden Duhon on a 22-yard touchdown early in the second quarter to give Lake Worth a 37-0 edge. 

It took Carter-Riverside almost 21 minutes in game time to find the end zone as running back Jameer Muhammad rushed in a 29-yard touchdown at the 3:05 mark of the second quarter that cut the lead to 37-6. 

Muhammad, who came in as one of the top backs in DFW, nearly rushed for 150 yards on the night.

The Bullfrogs added one more touchdown before the intermission as Charles Williams took a swing pass in the left flat from Meza and scored from 11 yards out to put Lake Worth on top 44-6. Carter-Riverside scored its final touchdown of the game with time expiring in the first half.

Muhammad made a great catch from Kentrell Parkman and scored on a 17-yard touchdown to make it 44-13 at the break. 

Lake Worth added just one more touchdown in the second quarter – a 12-yard run midway through the third quarter by Avington, who came into the game with nine total touchdowns this season (4 rushing, 5 receiving). Avington scored on a 43-yard pass from Meza to put Lake Worth on the board 66 seconds into the game.

Damion Hopkins punched it in from the 1 with 8:12 left in the first quarter. Avington scored on a 68-yard run to push the lead to 23-0 at the 3:39 mark and added a 20-yard touchdown catch from Meza with under a minute remaining. 

Lake Worth gained 228 yards on the ground and 370 overall.

Avington only had four touches, but had 80 yards rushing with two TDs and two catches for 63 yards and two TDs.

The Bullfrogs beat the Eagles 52-6 last season in district play – that was the first meeting between the schools since 2009 when Lake Worth won 53-29. The same season, the Bullfrogs won a district title. 

Lake Worth also won a district title last season.
