Not since beating Aledo during the 2013 season, has the Granbury volleyball team seen a bigger win in district than the one on Friday against Justin Northwest.
Northwest was the only undefeated team in 5-5A remaining and ranked #13 in the Class 5A state poll.
But behind setter Allyson McCabe’s huge double double, the Pirates got the upset over the Texans 20-25, 25-18, 24-26, 29-27, 15-12.
Granbury (12-20, 3-1) moves into second place with two thirds of the district season left. Northwest dropped to 20-8 and 3-1. Both teams are a game back in the win column of first place Aledo (23-8, 4-1).
After taking the loss in the first set, the Pirates stormed back in the second and tied the match convincingly. The third and fourth sets were thrillers that went past 25 and Granbury used the win in the fourth as momentum to surge past Northwest in the fifth.
The Pirates’ three wins in district is more than they had last season when they finished 2-10 in 5-5A.
Sienna Watts led the Granbury attack with 20 kills while Rachael Poirier added 17. Brooke Marak chipped in 12 kills and a team high 0.458 hitting. McCabe posted 53 assists and 21 digs.
Lily McCall had a team high 39 digs followed by Kylie Moody (18) and Bailey Blum (14).
Northwest was led by Lilly Croshaw’s 22 kills on 0.378 hitting. Levariya Pinder and Rylee Jackson each had 18 kills. Pinder put in 29 digs. Cami Ortman added 26 digs. Madison Scrivner had 59 assists and 10 digs.
