FORT WORTH – The Wyatt Chaparrals and Southwest Raiders entered Saturday’s game a little more fresh after having their bye weeks in Week 4. Wyatt came in 3-0 while Southwest was looking to get to 0.500 with a 1-2 record.
The game was tied 7-7 in the first quarter, but Wyatt would score 32 unanswered as the Chaps went on to win 52-13 in the District 4-5A Division 2 opener for both teams at Clark Stadium.
Wyatt gets off to a 4-0 start for the second straight season (4-0, 1-0) while Southwest drops to 1-3 and 0-1. Wyatt, which also beat Dallas Lincoln, Joshua and Dunbar, will get a big test against Arlington Heights on Friday. Meanwhile, the Raiders will try to bounce back Saturday Sept. 30 against Trimble Tech.
The first drives for both teams were a complete 180.
Wyatt received the opening kickoff and started deep in its own territory. After a false start, the Chpas ran 10 plays and gained 90 yards while kicking nearly half the quarter. Wyatt got a first-and-goal at the 5 and reached the 3, but sacks and penalties put the Chaps into a fourth-and-goal from the 35.
With Jorvorskie Lane behind center, he took the snap and tossed a pass to Jeremiah Boone who came down with it in the end zone for a 35-yard TD and 7-0 lead. Southwest took its first drive near midfield and scored on its first play from scrimmage.
Martavious Boswell took the hand off and bounced outside for a 51-yard TD run to tie the game with 6:23 left in the first quarter. Boswell led all rushers with 125 yards and two TDs on just nine carries.
From there it was all Wyatt.
The Chaps did lose 32 yards on a bad snap during a punt attempt that gave Southwest a first and goal at the 3, but on the first play of that drive, the Raiders fumbled and Wyatt recovered. The Chaps did move to the 36 after Southwest was called for two unsportsmanlike penalties.
Wyatt capped off the drive with a Dartagnan Crawford TD run near the end of the first quarter. The Chaps ran 23 plays for 122 yards during the first quarter and had a time of possession of 11:48. Southwest had two plays on offense and had the ball for 12 seconds.
Damario Goss scored his first of three touchdowns from 20 yards out to put Wyatt up 20-7 with 10:20 left in the second quarter. Wyatt was flagged with a 15-yard penalty on the extra point, to put the ball at the 18. The kick was short and Southwest’s KJ Haley caught it seven yards into the end zone.
Haley was untouched and returned it for two points, but the play was called back and no good.
Goss scored from the 4 and the Chaps extended the lead to 27-7 midway through the second. Lane added a 3-yard touchdown and the Chaps led 33-7 at halftime. Crawford hit Lane on a 31-yard score to make it 32 straight points and 39-7 lead with 9:04 left in the third.
Boswell added his second touchdown on a 32-yard run to cut it to 39-13 at the 4:45 mark.
Wyatt finished with 393 yards on 64 plays. The Chaps rushed 54 times for 228. Goss rushed for 73 yards on 18 carries. Crawford added 49 yards on the ground and went 8 of 8 through the air for 125 yards. Lane caught six passes for 105 yards and rushed for 21 yards.
Southwest was limited to 101 yards on 27 plays.
Boswell led the Raiders with 125 yards on nine carries.
