College Athletes of the Week: Southlake Carroll’s Quinn Ewers and Denton Guyer’s Kyndal Stowers

In our return of GM Sports Media’s male and female college athletes of the week, Texas QB Quinn Ewers and Baylor Outside Hitter Kyndal Stowers are the winners.

College athletes must have played for a high school in DFW.

MALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: QUINN EWERS

Ewers, who starred at Southlake Carroll, led the Longhorns to an upset on the road over #3 Alabama 34-24. The second year UT quarterback was an efficient 24 of 38 passing for 349 yards and 3 touchdowns. He added 11 yards on three carries and had a QB rating of 89.4 according to ESPN.

The Horns are 2-0 this season after beating Rice at home 37-10 in Week 1.

Ewers threw for 260 yards and 3 TDs against the Owls. He added one rushing touchdowns.

The win over Bama leaped Texas to #4 in the the AP Top 25 on Monday. He was also named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week.

Ewers entered the season named to the preseason watch lists for the Maxwell Award, Walter Camp Player of the Year, Davey O’Brien Award, Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, Manning Award, Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award and Lonestar Player of the Year … chosen third-team Preseason All-Big 12 by Athlon Sports and Phil Steele … selected second-team Preseason All-Texas by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football.

Last year, he was honorable mention Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year after starting in 10 games. he threw for 2,177 yards and 15 TDs. Ewers was the top ranked player out of Carroll and an All-American.

In his Carroll HS career, he threw for 6,500 yards and 73 touchdowns to only 8 INTs and had a 70 completion percentage. He added 12 TDs in 22 career games.

FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: KYNDAL STOWERS

Stowers had a monster week for the Baylor Bears, capped off with a 3-0 sweep over Pacific on Sunday to help the team go to 3-1.

In three wins over Pacific, Bowling Green and Colorado State, Stowers hit 0.400 or better. Against CSU and BG, she combined for 39 kills and a 0.464.

During a 3-2 loss against SMU last Tuesday, Stowers finished with 29 kills, 0.303 hitting percentage and 16 digs.

In her first seven career matches, Stowers has 112 kills.

Out of Guyer HS, she was the 16th ranked player in the country and top-ranked prospect from the state. She finished her career with 1,330 kills and helped the Wildcats to two appearances to the regional tournament.

In 2021 she was voted District MVP and was a two-time All-American as a senior.
