Brock rallies against Wimberley, but falls short against Texans

Brock QB Brody Woods accounted for four touchdowns, but the Eagles fell short against 4A state-ranked Wimberley on Thursday at Mary Hardin-Baylor in a battle between 2022 state finalists.

Woods went 18 of 28 for 253 yards and three TDs plus one interception.

He added 27 yards on eight carries with one touchdown.

Brock’s defense held on a fourth-and-long to take the ball over on downs and the Eagles went to score on a QB sneak from Woods to make it 7-0 with 4:02 left in the first quarter.

With five seconds left in the period, Wimberley tied it on a Cody Stoever TD pass to Nolan Waida. The Texans took a 14-7 lead with 8:04 left in the half on a Stoever 41-yard pass to Noah Birdsong.

Wimberley, which beat Brock last season 32-23, took a 21-7 lead into intermission following a second connection from Stoever to Waida with just under three minutes showing on the clock.

However, Brock would score 14 unanswered on TD passes from Woods to Colt Matlock and Carson Finney. Finney’s TD tied it at 21 with 4:13 remaining in the third.

Wimberley led 28-21 under a minute left in the third on a Stoever TD after the Texans converted two fourth downs during the drive.

Tyler Butler scored 15 yards out for Brock, but the PAT was blocked as Wimberley held on 28-27 midway through the fourth. Stoever rushed for an 11-yard TD to push the Texans to an 8-point lead with 2:11 left to play.

Brock (1-2) was held to 57 yards on 22 carries.

Matlock (4 catches, 100 yards, TD), Finney (7-69-1) and Britton Burrows (4-66) led the receiving core for the Eagles. Three players had 10 or more tackles- Cooper Massey (17), Hyatt Dunaway (11) and Luke Cearley (10). Brock’s D has 15 tackles for loss, six sacks and eight QB hurries.

Houston baseball commit Cam Harris had eight tackles, four for loss and two sacks.

Brock lost to Texarkana Pleasant Grove 10-7 in the opener and beat WF Hirschi in Week 2. The Eagles started last season 0-4 before winning 11 in a row to reach the Class 3A state title game.

Wimberley went 15-1 last season and lost to Carthage 42-0 in the Class 4A D2 title game.
