It took extra time for the Benbrook Bobcats to get off to their best start since the 2018 season.
Benbrook’s defense tipped a pass attempt and the Bobcats came down with the game-sealing interception to beat Iow Park 34-28 in overtime on Thursday night at Farrington Field.
The Bobcats are 2-0 for the first time since winning their first three during 2018 – finishing with an 8-3 record.
They beat Sanger 49-27 in Week 1.
Benbrook started OT with the ball and took a 7-yard sack to begin the drive. But on third down, the Bobcats scored on a 25-yard touchdown. The PAT was no good as the lead was six at 34-28.
Iowa Park dropped to 0-2 this season.
After an early Iowa Park touchdown, Benbrook scored on a 12-yard TD catch from Deshawn Deane to make it 7-6 Bobcats with 5:23 on the first-quarter clock. The Hawks regained the 13-7 lead early in the second quarter on an 8-yard TD pass from QB Parker Allen to Coyt Holloway.
Chris Harris scored on a 7-yard run to push Benbrook ahead 14-13 midway through the period. Lucas Jackson added an 11-yard TD catch to give the Bobcats a 21-13 edge at intermission.
Benbrook extended the lead to 28-13 midway through the third.
The Bobcats held on to that 15-point lead going into the final quarter. But the Hawks rallied with a 2-yard TD from Allen to make it 28-20 four seconds into the fourth. Then Allen threw an 8-yard TD to Rody Williams to pull within 28-26.
Allen ran in the two-point conversion and the game was tied at 28 with 20 seconds left in regulation.
