Over the past two seasons, the Burleson Centennial football team has posted an impressive 17-2 record.
Entering Week 6 of the high school football season, the Spartans are just one of 11 teams in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex that are still undefeated. They’re 5-0 with a bye this week and will come back to play Denton Ryan on Oct. 6.
Last year’s group was historic.
Centennial went four rounds deep and its 12 wins were most for any Burleson team in a single season.
While coach Kyle Geller’s team had athletes left and right, one of them was 2024 corner Cole Confessore. He was voted second-team in District 3-5A Division 1 in 2022. Cole finished with 32 total tackles, 14 solo tackles, 6 pass deflections, a forced fumble and one interception return for a touchdown. He also had a rushing TD and averaged 28.6 yards per return.
“Football has been something I’ve done my whole life and I’ve always wanted it to stay like that. I love the sport and all the people that come with it,” he said. “The feeling of throwing up that incomplete sign after a pass breakup is an unexplainable feeling and even though I switched to defense the last two years, I really do enjoy having the ball in my hands.”
Confessore is listed at 6-0 and 185 pounds.
He’s a 4-year starter for the varsity program at Centennial, which has gone 27-13 during that time with three playoff appearances and a fourth sure to come later this season. In five games this fall, the Spartans have outscored teams 178-46 and Confessore and the defense is allowing 9.1 points per game. Centennial has beaten Burleson (35-6), Frisco (14-13), Saginaw (40-13), The Colony (33-14) and FW South Hills (56-0).
Confessore has 18 tackles this season, one forced fumble, one interception and two fumble recoveries. He’s also allowed just one catch while in man coverage.
He has a lot of confidence in his team in 2023.
“You can expect another deep playoff run here at Centennial,” Confessore said. “I am most excited for the Denton Ryan game and hopefully another matchup against Lake Belton.” The Spartans beat Ryan last year 23-16 and Lake Belton in the playoffs 56-28.
Confessore has been playing football since he was 5.
He said some of his favorite players include Eli Manning, Odell Beckham Jr., Prince Amukamara and Saquon Barkley.
His dream colleges include TCU, Texas, Baylor, LSU and Ole Miss.
“My favorite memories were my youth super bowl, freshman year, the Denton Ryan win last year, my first varsity pick six and the Frisco win this season where I had my favorite interception of my career,” Cole said. He’s still searching for a home the next four years at the next level and wants coaches to know he’s a player that doesn’t accept failure. “If a coach recruits me, they’re getting a player that doesn’t accept failure. I want everything to be perfect and I’m extremely unsatisfied if it isn’t. I will work through anything to make it happen.”
