Former Arlington Martin coach Bob Wager resigns from Nebraska following driving offense

Only a half year into his new role with Matt Rhule’s staff at Nebraska and Bob Wager has left his post. Wager, the longtime head football coach at Arlington Martin, resigned on Friday following a driving citation during the past week.

Wager officially joined the staff in December as a tight ends coach and special teams assistant.

In a statement from Wager, he said “It is with great remorse that I resign from my position as assistant football coach at the University of Nebraska. Earlier this week I received a citation for a driving offense that I regret immensely. I am grateful for the opportunity extended to me, and sincerely sorry for any negativity my poor decision has brought to my family, our team, our staff and all those that I have disappointed.”

Josh Martin was promoted to a full-time role for Nebraska.

According to the Lincoln Journal Star, Wager received a DUI with a suspected blood alcohol content of .15, which is about twice the legal limit. It was his first offense.

Wager spent the previous 17 years at the helm with the Martin Warriors.

Wager had been the athletic coordinator and head football coach at Martin since the 2006 season. He led the Warriors to a playoff berth that season, which snapped a seven-year drought.

Last fall, the Warriors went 6-0 in district and 10-2 overall with a trip the Class 6A Division 1 area round. Martin has won a district title in four straight seasons while not dropping a game in that span (30-0-1). Overall, Wager has led Martin to seven undefeated district championships.

In 17 seasons, Martin has won at least 10 games eight times. The Warriors have 11 bi-district titles under Wager and made a trip to the regional final in 2011. Nine times, they’ve gone to the regional semifinals. Their trip in 2009 was a first for Martin in 12 years.

His first job was a Carter Junior High in Arlington 30 years ago. Four years after that, he was the offensive coordinator at Arlington Sam Houston. Wager also spent four years at Tolar, three years at Groveton and one year at Kaufman. While at Tolar, Wager took the rattlers to the playoffs three times and led the team to their first playoff win in program history.

Overall, Wager has accumulated a 206-100 career record with more than 140 coming with Martin.

His son, Gage, will be a freshman with the Huskers as a running back, kicker and punter.
