2023 DFW PRESEASON ALL AREA FIRST TEAM
Prosper and Sachse 2024 stars are headed to Europe with Team USA as part of the FIVBA Girls U19 World Championships in early August. Ayden Ames (Prosper 2024 outside) and Favor Anyanwu (Sachse 2024 middle) are two of 12 players selected to the team that will compete from Aug. 1-11 in Osijek, Croatia, and Szeged, Hungary.
Both Ames and Anyanwu are entering their senior years of high school. Becca Kelley, who graduated from Rockwall in the spring and is at Oregon, is also on the team.
Ames is committed to Nebraska and was voted District 5-6A Hitter of the Year last season. Anyanwu is committed to USC and was 9-6A Offensive MVP.
According to USA Volleyball, the team has been training at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs since July 22 and will leave for Europe on Saturday.
Jamie Morrison is head coach. He coached the 2022 team to the Pan American Cup win, will serve as the team’s head coach. He will be assisted by Michelle Chatman Smith and Maggie Eppright.
The U.S. Girls U18 Team (coached by Morrison) took bronze at the last World Championship in 2021 (the FIVB raised the age to U19 the following year), beating Serbia in the third-place match. U.S. teams won gold at the 2019 World Championship and silver in 2015.
There are 24 teams from around the world competing at the World Championship. The U.S. Girls U19 Team will open the World Championship with a match against Korea in Osijek, Croatia. They will go on to play Japan, Mexico, Poland and Serbia.
Ames, standing 6-foot-4, helped Prosper to the Class 6A Region 1 final last season. She posted 564 kills, 0.315 hitting, 256 digs and 97 blocks. During the past two seasons, she has 1,019 kills and 147 blocks. She was predicted as 5-6A MVP this season as well as first team All-DFW by GM Sports Media.
Anyanwu had over 400 kills and 100 blocks as Sachse won district and reached the regional quarterfinals. She was also predicted as first team All-DFW by GM Sports Media. Kelley was All-American and 10-6A MVP after helping Rockwall to the fourth round. She had 508 kills (5.7 kills per set) and 263 digs. Kelley was named to the Dallas Morning News All Area team.
Macaria Spears from Prestonwood is listed as an alternate. She is GM Sports Media Preseason All-DFW MVP after leading the Lions to the TAPPS 6A state title and winning Gatorade Texas POTY.
