TCU survives and advances past Virginia in Omaha

Facing elimination at the College World Series, the TCU Horned Frogs defeated the Virginia Cavaliers 4-3 on Sunday in Omaha, Neb.

TCU (43-23) will face Oral Roberts at 1 pm Tuesday in another elimination game.

Oral Roberts, which lost 5-4 against Florida on Sunday, sent TCU to the loser’s bracket with a 6-5 win on Friday.

Elijah Nunez, an Arlington Martin grad, led the game off with a double and scored on a sac fly from Fontenelle to give TCU a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

The Cavs tied it at 1 in the bottom of the first on an RBI grounder.

Cole Fontenelle picked up his second RBI in the third to put TCU ahead 2-1. Nunez hit an RBI single to right center to extend the lead 3-1 in the sixth.

Virginia got a home run from Fisher Ingersoll in the seventh to cut the lead to 3-2.

Austin Davis doubled in the eighth to send Silva home and TCU led 4-2. The Cavs pulled within one in the bottom of the inning. Virginia put the tying run with a single in the bottom of the ninth before Ben Abeldt got Anthony Stephan to strike out swinging.

Abeldt recorded his second save of the year. Starter Sam Stoutenborough allowed one run on two hits in 4 2/3 innings. Garrett Wright (3-2) got the win. He struck out four in 2 2/3 innings.

Nunez, Karson Bowen, Anthony Silva and Davis all got multiple hits for the Frogs.
