TCU avenges loss to knock off Oral Roberts, advances to CWS semifinals

After suffering its only loss in the College World Series 6-5 on Friday against Oral Roberts, the TCU Horned Frogs avenged it Tuesday with a 6-1 to knock out the Golden Eagles in Omaha.

TCU (44-23) advances to the semifinals to play No. 2 seed Florida.

The Frogs will have to beat the Gators twice to move on to the national championship series.

TCU and Florida will play 1 pm Wednesday on ESPN.

A four run fifth inning propelled the Frogs on Tuesday. Hunter Hodges and Cohen Feser came out of the bullpen and combined for 4 1/3 scoreless innings.

Flower Mound’s Cam Brown started the game from the mound, his first game in 15 days. Along with Brown, Luke Savage, Hodges and Feser, the pitching staff gave up only one run on seven hits.

Savage picked up the win (6-4).

Kurtis Byrne, Cole Fontenelle and Arlington Martin’s Elijah Nunez all had multiple hits. Austin Davis got the scoring started in the top of the first inning with a bases loaded walk. ORU looked to tie it in the third with two runners on in scoring position, but Brown got a pop fly and a strikeout to end the threat.

TCU led 2-0 in the fourth first on a balk call.

The Frogs got four runs on four hits in the fifth to extend the lead to 6-0. Nunez hit a lead off single and went to third on a grounder and stolen base. Fontenelle hit a single to center to make it 3-0. Byrne hit a sac fly and Anthony Silva hit a two out two run single to give TCU a six run lead.

TCU finished with 11 total hits. The Frogs win multiple games at the CWS for the fifth time in six appearances. For the 34th time this season, TCU had 10 or more hits.

The Gators beat Virginia 6-5 on Friday and ORU 5-4 on Sunday.
