The three things that first come to mind when I think of Morgan Medford: her glove, her energy and her infectious smile.
Medford will take all the above on her next adventure in a new jersey.
It will be in a city that’s very special to her.
Medford, who spent the past four seasons starring at Tarleton State, announced on Thursday her transfer to the University of North Texas. She graduated from Denton Guyer in 2019, only seven miles from UNT.
She started right away as a Tarleton freshman in 2020. Medford hit 0.373 in 23 games before COVID cut the season short. Medford played in 187 games with 186 starts. She started the first 131 games of her career during her first three seasons.
Her 187 games played in 10th all time in program history.
She finished 11th all time with 174 hits, sixth in runs (122), recorded 16 doubles, five triples and 49 runs batted in. She drew the sixth most walks (68) and showcased her glove with 290 putouts and 353 assists (third all time).
Medford has the most runs scored in a single game with five during a contest in 2022. That same year, she was named Second Team All-WAC.
She helped Tarleton State to back to back trips to the NISC, with its 2022 appearance as the program’s first Division 1 postseason berth. While Medford is among the Top 10 in several career marks, she is among the best in Tarleton’s D1 era. She has the most hits in a game with four, most games played in a season (56 in 2023) and runs scored (48 in 2022). She is second in hits (62 in 2022) and first and second in assists (108 in 2021 and 105 in 2022).
In her first career game in 2020, Medford went 2 for 4 with two RBI and a stolen base.
In her final game in 2023, Medford went 1 for 2 against South Dakota State in the NISC.
Medford was one of the top defensive players while making a handful of spectacular plays at shortstop. She even made SportsCenter’s Top 10 plays.
During her time with Guyer, Medford played for father Keith.
She broke multiple school records, including runs scored in a season (51), on base percentage (0.625), as well as career on base percentage (0.602), career batting average (0.521), and career walks (55).
Medford was a three time first team all district pick and 2019 District Offensive MVP. She was also a four time All-Area selection by the DRC.
Her father Keith continues to be Guyer’s head coach. He’s the only head softball coach in program history (18 years). He led Guyer to the state semifinals in 2010 and returned to Austin in 2023. The Wildcats started the season 35-0, finished 38-2 and reached the state title game for the first time, a 3-2 loss against Pearland.
