After six seasons that featured three trips to the regional final and two trips to the UIL Class 6A state tournament, Keller softball head coach and Indians alum Christina Gwyn is headed north to the college ranks.
On Monday, Gwyn was officially announced as the next pitching coach at the University of North Texas where she joins brother Jason on the Rodney DeLong Mean Green staff.
Following back to back state championships, Gwyn was hired by her alma mater for the 2018 season and took the Indians to the 6A Region 1 final where they lost a close one game series against Plano. The following year, Keller reached the 6A state tournament but lost 1-0 to Katy in the semifinals.
COVID canceled the 2020 playoffs and after an early exit in 2021, Keller won back to back district championships while reaching the second round in 2022 and the regional final this season. Keller is coming off a 35-11 record and undefeated title in 4-6A.
The Indians won Game 1 of the regional final against Denton Guyer 5-4, but was knocked out after losing Game 2 and Game 3. Keller went 155-46-2 in six seasons with Gwyn.
The UIL state softball tournament concluded during the first weekend of June, but it marked the 20 year anniversary of Keller’s first title. Gwyn led the Indians that year from the circle.
She is second in nearly every pitching category at Keller when the rubber was at 40 feet. She struck out 586 batters in just two seasons with the Indians.
Gwyn went on to play softball at Texas and BYU.
