Former DFW softball star robs home run, helps Sooners to 3-peat

Oklahoma defeated Florida State 3-1 in Game 2 of the Women’s College World Series championship on Thursday to complete a historic 61-1 season.

The Sooners captured another national championship, their third in a row and seventh overall. OU finished with an NCAA record 53 straight wins.

OU junior center fielder Jayda Coleman (The Colony 2020) has been known for making plays well before she stepped foot in Norman. She had one of the most dominant high school careers of all time, capped off with the Gatorade National player of the year during her senior season.

Plus, she’s always been a winner.

Coleman helped The Colony to the 5A title in 2017.

The Cougars also reached state in 2019.

All she’s done is win in Norman. Three years with the Sooners and three national championships. Despite not getting a hit on Thursday, she made her impact on defense.

With the game scoreless, the Seminoles put two runners on in the bottom of the third and Kalei Harding drove a pitch well into deep center. Looking at a three run home run on No. 1 Oklahoma, Coleman leaped against the wall and made the catch to rob the potential homer.

Cydney Sanders and Grace Lyons would later hit back to back home runs for OU and Jordy Bahl pitched in relief and was voted most outstanding player.

OU also beat FSU 5-4 in March and 5-0 in Game 1 on Wednesday.

Coleman went 1 for 3 with a walk and run in the WCWS champ series opener. The Sooners are the first team to win three titles in a row since UCLA (1988-90). OU also beat Florida State in the 2021 champ series.

OU is 176-8 during the past three seasons.

Its only loss this season came against Baylor, 4-3, on Feb. 19.

Coleman ends the year with a 0.408 batting average, 73 hits, 48 RBIs, 15 doubles, 17 home runs and 71 runs scored. The 17 homers matches her total from her first two seasons. After three years, Coleman has career totals of 34 homers, 210 hits, 211 runs and 141 runs batted in. She has started in all 184 games she’s played in.

She was the No. 1 player out of high school. She finished her career at The Colony with 279 hits, 261 runs, 209 stolen bases and batted 0.709.
