Anthony Black, who starred for the Duncanville basketball team, was selected No. 6 overall by the Orlando Magic during Thursday night’s NBA Draft.
The San Antonio Spurs picked 7-5 Victor Wembanyama with the No. 1 overall pick.
Black played one season at Arkansas where he was All-SEC second team and made the SEC all-freshman team. He was the only player in the SEC last season in the Top 25 in scoring, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks.
He averaged 12.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 2.1 steals and just under a block per game for the Razorbacks. He was the only player on Arkansas that started in all 36 games.
Arkansas (22-14) reached the second round of the SEC tournament where it lost 67-61 against Texas A&M. But the Razorbacks did go three rounds deep in the NCAA tournament, beating Illinois and No. 1 seed Kansas 72-71. They lost to 4-seeded UConn in the Sweet 16.
Black, who stands 6-foot-7, set program freshman season records in total steals, steals per game, minutes, minutes per game, free throw attempts, games and starts. He is the only player in program history to reach 450 points, 180 rebounds and 140 assists in a season.
Black was the No. 1 prospect in high school and a McDonald’s All-American. He started his career at Coppell before graduating from Duncanville where he helped the Panthers to a state title in 2022 and was named state champ MVP. The title would later be striped by the UIL due to league transfer regulations.
Richardson’s Cason Wallace was nearly a Dallas Maverick.
Wallace was selected No. 10 overall by the Mavericks, but traded to Oklahoma City.
In the same class as Black, Wallace played one season at fellow SEC school Kentucky. The 6-4 guard also made the SEC all-freshman team after starting 32 games for the Wildcats. He averaged 11.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 2 steals per game.
Wallace ranked second in the SEC in assists per game and fourth in steals. Kentucky went 22-12 and reached the second round of the NCAA tournament where it lost 75-69 to Kansas State.
Wallace was also a 5-star player out of high school and helped Richardson reach the state semifinals. He was a two time District MVP and Gatorade Texas Player of the Year in 2022. As a senior he averaged 20 points, 7.5 rebounds and 6 assists for the Eagles.
He was also a McDonald’s All-American.
