Flower Mound advances past Cypress Woods and into state baseball title game

Flower Mound is one win away from its first state baseball championship in nine years.

TCU commit Zack James tossed a complete game and allowed three runs on eight hits as the Jags beat Cypress Woods 6-3 in a UIL Class 6A state semifinal game on Friday at Dell Diamond in Round Rock.

The Jags will play for the title at 4 pm Saturday.

It’s Flower Mound’s first state appearance since 2014 when the Jags won the 5A title, 10-0 in five innings over San Antonio Reagan.

A four run first inning sparked the Jags during the day as 10 batters came to plate. Sam Erickson drew a lead off walk followed by a Cy Woods error. Erickson advanced to third on the play and then scored on a wild pitch.

Josh Glaser followed with an RBI single to give FM a 2-0 lead.

Two outs later and Cole Ridenour reached on a fielder’s choice to the Cy Woods pitcher. Glaser scored to increase the lead to 3-0. Sam Distel walked and after a pitching change, Andrew Robinson also drove in a run on a fielder’s choice. Zane Becker scored and the Jags led 4-0 in the top of the first inning.

Becker drew a two out walk in the top of the fifth.

Flower Mound went up 5-0 on a single up the middle from Ridenour.

Cy Woods would score three in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI double, RBI sac fly and RBI single. Seven batters came to the plate and Cy Woods cut the lead to 5-3.

FM got the final run of the game in the top of the seventh on a two out RBI single from Adrian Rodriguez that plated Kyle Conne. Cy Woods got eight hits compared to FM”s six.

Cy Woods would leave seven on base and commit four errors.
