Denton Guyer was playing in the state softball championship for the first time on Saturday and got off to another hot start.
The Wildcats scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning against Bridgeland during the semifinals before beating the Bears 6-3.
However, Guyer had trouble manufacturing runs after the first inning against Pearland on Saturday.
The Wildcats plated their only runs in the top of the first inning before falling to the Oilers 4-2 in the UIL Class 6A state final at McCombs Field in Austin.
It was Guyer’s second trip to state and first since 2010. The Wildcats end 38-2.
Coach Keith Medford, who has been the only head coach in program history, went to the small ball in the opening frame. Oregon commit Kaylynn Jones led off the game beating out an infield single. She was followed by Tehya Pitts who got on with a bunt single.
ACU bound Avery Jefferson also laid down a good bunt, but the throw to first was off and Jones scored to make it 1-0. Guyer bunted for the third consecutive time during Erin Peterson’s at bat. She was out at first but Pitts scored to give Guyer a 2-0 edge.
But unfortunately that was all of Guyer’s offense on the day.
Freshman ace Finley Montgomery started both games at state. Jenny Robledo finished Friday’s game vs Bridgeland. Montgomery ran into early trouble in the bottom of the first inning with runners in scoring position but got a grounder to Jefferson at third to end the threat.
Pearland got its first three batters on in the bottom of the second. The Oilers got an RBI walk and RBI single to tie the game at 2. Then Robledo came on in relief and Pearland got an RBI sac fly to take the lead.
Guyer got runners on in the second and third. Erin Love had a one out single in the second but the Wildcats hit into an inning ending double play. Pitts had a two out walk and stole second in the third before Pearland struck out a batter for the third out. Guyer put two on in the fourth, but back to back fly outs ended the rally. The Oilers loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fourth until Robledo got a pop up to Peterson at short and pop up to Jones at second.
Guyer was retired in order during the fifth.
Pearland added to its lead with back to back singles. Then the Oilers loaded the bases after a Guyer error. Next batter and Pearland got an RBI single to left to extend the lead to 4-2.
Robledo got a strikeout to end the fifth.
Guyer went down in order during the sixth. Montgomery returned to the circle after a lead off walk. The Oilers again loaded the bases until she got a grounder to Gracie Willis at first.
The Wildcats managed to get the tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh. Jones led off the inning with a single to left. After a pop fly, Guyer hit into a double play to end the game.
Guyer started the season 35-0
Its only other loss came in Game 1 against Keller in the regional final. Peterson, Love, Pitts and Lauryn Jones were named to the 6A state all-tournament team on Sunday.
