Alan McDougal, who graduated from Sherman High School, is headed back to his alma mater after the baseball program hired him as its next head coach.
McDougal had spent the previous 18 seasons at Colleyville Heritage and won more than 400 games.
He led the Panthers to their first state championship, a 14-2 win over Georgetown in the Class 5A state final in 2019. They were led by Gatorade National Player of the Year and All-American Bobby Witt Jr., who shortly after was selected by the Kansas City Royals with the No. 2 overall pick.
Heritage went 12-17-3 overall this season and 5-9 in District 7-5A.
McDougal started the season with Heritage, but the program ended with an interim coach.
Meanwhile Sherman posted an identical record to Heritage, going 12-17-3 overall and 5-7 in District 13-5A. The Bearcats made the playoffs for the first time since 2017 before getting knocked out by Ennis in two games.
McDougal takes over for Christopher Anderson.
