Flower Mound Marcus is one win away from its second UIL girls soccer state championship after shutting out Round Rock Westwood 4-0 in a Class 6A state semifinal game on Friday at Birkelbach Field in Georgetown.
Marcus will play in the state final for the fourth time in program history (2003, 2005, 2018). The Marauders (25-1-1) will play Fort Bend Ridge Point (24-0-5) at 4 pm Saturday.
Ridge Point defeated Wylie East 4-3 in overtime on Friday.
Kansas signee Caroline Castans hit a cross 40 yards out and Bella Campos (Colorado School of Mines) scored on a header five yards away in the 18th minute. Campos was tripped inside the box in the 46th minute and converted the penalty kick to push the Marcus lead to 2-0.
The Marauders scored two more goals in the 61st and 70th minutes.
Freshman Madi Patterson extended the lead to 3-0 when Chloe Adams’ free kick found Patterson, who hit a one-timer to the back post. Castans hit a corner nine minutes later and Patterson scored the brace to make it 4-0.
Westwood (13-5-8) was making its first trip to state since 1999 and eighth overall, but have yet to win a title. This is Marcus’ seventh trip to state and first since 2018. Marcus has one title, a 4-0 win over North Mesquite in 2005.
Marcus lost to Houston Memorial 3-0 in the 2018 state title game.
The Marcus defense continued its stellar play with another shutout. Westwood only managed four shots with two shots on goal. Both were saved by junior keeper Bry Russell, who was named DFW goal keeper of the week last week after the Marauders on the Class 6A Region tournament.
Westwood keeper Atlee Olofson made six saves.
Marcus out-shot Westwood 3-1 in the first half and 10-3 in the second half (13-4 total). The Marauders had seven corner attempts to Westwood’s three. Russell and Taylor Mcenaney were in goal for Marcus.
Castans tied the Class 6A state tournament record with two assists (six others). Marcus’ three assists total is also tied for the 6A record (seven others).
It’s the team’s third straight shutout and 17th of the season. Marcus beat Byron Nelson 1-0 in overtime during the regional semis and 1-0 over Carroll in the regional final. Patterson scored the lone goal against Byron and her attempt early in the second half against Carroll resulted in an own goal from the Dragons.
Marcus has won 17 straight and has scored 128 goals versus 15 against.
