SOFTBALL
Game 1
Keller Central 6, LD Bell 1 (9): The Chargers scored five runs on two hits and two walks in the top of the ninth inning to defeat the Blue Raiders in Game 1 of their Class 6A Region 1 bi-district series on Friday.
Morgan Crandall and Olivia Sullivan had back-to-back walks with one out in the top of the ninth. Then Central advanced both runners into scoring position following a bunt by Jaelyn Estes. Kirsten Wilkinson broke the 1-1 tie with a two-run double to center.
The Chargers added three more runs with a fielder’s choice, sac fly and an RBI double to central from Savanah Tatum.
Then Addi Brown struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth as Central, No. 4 in 4-6A, upset 3-6A champ Bell. Brown had four strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings. Izzy Cornell started and allowed four hits and struck out 12 in 7 1/3 innings.
Central took a 1-0 lead in the top of the eighth when Marilyn Korywchak drove in Wilkinson. Bell tied it in the bottom half of the inning when Alina Vogt scored on a Presley Rivers RBI.
Game 2
Keller Central 5, Bell 0: Brown allowed seven hits, one walk and struck out 11 batters as the Chargers pulled off the sweep over the Blue Raiders in their Class 6A Region 1 bi-district series on Friday.
The Chargers (17-12-1) clinches their first softball playoff series win in program history. This is Central’s first playoff appearance since 2012.
Central will play the winner of Frenship/Socorro in the area round.
Cornell came in with one out in the sixth inning and picked up the final two outs with one walk and one strikeout.
The Chargers started much more quickly than their Game 1 win with three runs in the first inning and two runs in the second inning. Central had just five hits, but zero errors versus Bell’s seven hits and two errors.
Wilkinson homered, drove in two and scored two runs. Tatum had a double and three RBIs. Tatum, Sullivan, Estes and Korywchak had hits for Central.
Bell left nine runners on base. The Raiders, 3-6A champs, ended the season 22-10-1. They won their first district title since 2016. Hannah Timani led Bell with three hits. Aia Lilomaiava pitched for Bell and finished with five runs on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts in six innings.
