Fort Worth’s Madi Williams drafted by WNBA’s Seattle Storm

FW Trinity Valley grad Madi Williams was selected No. 18 overall by the Seattle Storm during the WNBA draft on Monday.

Williams was a McDonald’s All-American at TVS before spending five season playing college basketball with the Oklahoma Sooners. Williams played 147 career games at OU and finished with career averages of 16.1 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game.

Williams shot 44.7% from the field and 30.7% from downtown.

She helped the Sooners to the Round of 32 during the past two seasons. Williams was ESPN’s second best small forward in the 2023 WNBA draft and ranked No.14 overall. The Storm went 22-14 in 2022, finished second in the Western Conference before losing in the semifinals to the Las Vegas Aces.

In high school, Williams was a 5-star player and ranked the No. 1 wing and No. 8 prospect by Prospect Nation. She was a 4-star player and No. 4/No. 24 respectively by ESPN. Along with the McDonald’s All-American game, Williams also played in the Jordan Brand Class.

In the McDonald’s game, she led her team with 13 points on 6 of 11 shooting. She made the 2018 All-USA Texas Girls Basketball Team after averaging 25.7 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals as a senior.

Williams is the 15th Sooner to be drafted and first since Whitney Hand in 2013. She’s the highest OU selection since Danielle Robinson in 2011 (sixth). She’s a three-time All-Big 12 first-team selection and helped OU to its first conference title since 2009.

Williams finished her OU career in the Top 10 all time in points, rebounds, assists, steals, games played and starts. She finished second all time with 2,365 points and is the first player with 2,000 points, 950 rebounds and 300 assists.

Other awards Williams received at OU: WBCA All-American, Cheryl Miller Award finalist and Big 12 player of the week three times.
