Three players from the metroplex helped Wichita State to an upset win over No. 2 Oklahoma State 8-7 on Tuesday.
The No. 22 Shockers recorded their highest ranked win in school history behind eight runs on 14 hits and no errors versus seven runs on 10 hits and two errors for OSU.
Wichita State improved to 31-7 this season. The Shockers continue conference play at Memphis starting on Thursday.
Sami Hood, the freshman second baseman from Allen HS, only had one hit on the night, but a big one with a solo home run to right center in the second inning to put the Shockers on top 1-0.
It was Hood’s fourth dinger of the season along with 24 hits and 16 RBIs.
Wichita State jumped out to a 4-0 lead with three more runs in the second inning. Lauren Lucas, a junior center fielder from Little Elm HS, was the only player for the Shockers to bat 1.000. Her RBI single to left field extended the lead to 3-0.
But Oklahoma State wouldn’t fall lightly.
The Cowgirls (32-3) put up three runs in the third and two in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead.
The Shockers came back in the bottom of the fourth inning with four runs to grab the lead back at 8-5. Lucas added another hit in the inning and scored to make it 7-5.
Lucas finished 3 for 3 with one RBI, one run and one walk.
OSU scored two in the fifth to cut it to 8-7.
Alison Cooper, a sophomore pitcher from Granbury, did pick up the win in relief. She pitched 2 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on five hits with one strikeout. She shut out OSU in the final two frames. Cooper improved to 10-3 on the season.
Lucas is batting 0.369 with 48 hits, three home runs and 47 RBI. She batted 0.387 last season as a sophomore with 60 hits, 10 homers and 39 RBI. At Little Elm, Lucas was regarded as one of the best two-way players in the area while also pitching for the Lobos. She earned multiple accolades and was metroplex all-star and helped Little Elm to a regional final.
Hood was also a metroplex all-star at Allen and led the Dallas-area in 2022 with a record 20 home runs.
