Argyle Liberty Christian’s Corey McMann, Flower Mound’s Abby Jackson and FW All Saints’ Ashton Mares are the latest DFW college athletes of the week.
McMann, a fifth-year senior at Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio, set the program record for the most career hits with 198, breaking the previous record set by Scott Bush in 2001.
Ohio Northern won a double-header against John Carroll, both on walk-offs 6-5 in nine innings and 10-7 in 13 innings. McMann entered the games with 194 career hits and had four on Saturday to set the record.
The Polar Bears have won seven straight and sit at 19-9 overall and 7-3 in conference. McMann had one hit in Game 1 and three in Game 2, breaking Bush’s record with a single in the ninth inning. He went 1 for 4 with a run scored in Game 1 and 3 for 5 with a home run, two RBIs and a run scored in Game 2.
McMann has 18 homers, 113 RBIs, 47 doubles and 100 runs scored in his career. He helped the Warriors to a TAPPS state title as a senior in 2018.
Jackson and Mares play beach volleyball for Tulane, going a perfect 4-0 over the weekend in Alabama against Central Arkansas, Southern Miss and UAB. Jackson and Mares were one of only two pairs for the Green Wave to go 4-0. They defeated UAB 22-20, 19-21, 16-14 and UCA on Sunday 21-16, 2-18.
The Tulane duo defeated UCA on Saturday 20-22, 21-15, 15-9 and Southern Miss 21-15, 21-14.
Tulane is 20-8 this season.
Mares, a senior, was 22-14 last season with 13 sweeps. At All Saints, she won a state title as a junior in 2017. Mares won multiple awards including district MVP. She led DFW and set a program record with 701 kills as a junior.
Jackson, a graduate student, played three seasons at Florida Atlantic University.
She helped FAU to a conference title in 2021. She also played one season at Missouri State.
Jackson played outside hitter and libero during her time at Flower Mound.
